This old town occupies the middle reaches of the Oi River and the surrounding mountain areas in Haibara District, Shizuoka Prefecture. It is a producer of high-quality Kawane tea, and forestry is also thriving. It produces timber such as cedar and cypress. The Oigawa Railway runs through the town. In September 2005, it merged with Honkawane Town, Haibara District, to become Kawane Town, Haibara District. Area 121.37 km2. Population 6,494 (2003). 静岡県榛原(はいばら)郡,大井川中流域と周辺山地を占める旧町。良質な川根茶の産地で,林業も盛ん。スギ,ヒノキなど木材を産する。大井川鉄道が通じる。2005年9月,榛原郡本川根町と合併し町制,榛原郡川根本町となる。121.37km2。6494人(2003)。
