江戸時代、出羽(でわ)国由利(ゆり)郡亀田（現、秋田県由利本荘(ほんじょう)市岩城亀田）に陣屋(じんや)をおいた外様(とざま)藩。藩校は長善館(ちょうぜんかん)。この地は、南北朝時代から、現在の山形県全域を支配していた最上(もがみ)氏の支配下にあった。11代最上義光(よしあき)は関ヶ原の戦いで徳川家康(とくがわいえやす)につき57万石に封ぜられたが、義光死後の内紛で幕府から改易(かいえき)処分を受け、1623年（元和(げんな)9）に、信濃(しなの)国川中島の岩城吉隆(いわきよしたか)が入部、2万石が与えられた。以後明治維新まで岩城氏13代が続いた。もともと岩城氏は陸奥(むつ)国磐城(いわき)（岩城）の豪族で、吉隆は秋田藩の初代藩主佐竹義宣(さたけよしのぶ)の甥(おい)にあたり、のち義宣の養子になるなど、江戸時代を通じて両藩は密接な関係をたもった。幕末の戊辰(ぼしん)戦争では、秋田藩とともに新政府に与したが、一時的に幕府方の庄内藩が優勢になると寝返った。しかし結局は勢いを取り戻した新政府軍に敗北。1871年（明治4）の廃藩置県により、亀田県を経て秋田県に編入された。
