A perennial plant of the Lythraceae family (APG classification: Lythraceae). It is similar to Lythrum salicaria, but is distinguished by its hairy calyx, stems, and leaves, and the base of the leaves clasping the stem. It grows in wetlands from Hokkaido to Kyushu, and is distributed in the Kuril Islands, Sakhalin, the Korean Peninsula, China, eastern Siberia, Central Asia, Europe, and North Africa, and has also naturalized in North America, where it has many variations.

ミソハギ科(APG分類:ミソハギ科)の多年草。ミソハギに似るが、エゾミソハギは萼(がく)や茎、葉も有毛で、葉の基部が茎を抱き、区別される。北海道から九州の湿地に生え、千島、樺太(からふと)(サハリン)、朝鮮半島、中国、東シベリア、中央アジア、ヨーロッパ、北アフリカに分布し、北アメリカにも帰化して変異が多い。
