Futakuchi Gorge - Futakuchikyokoku

A gorge in the upper reaches of the Natori River in Taihaku Ward, Sendai City, central Miyagi Prefecture. It is about 8 kilometers from Akiu Falls to the Futakuchi Pass area on the border with Yamagata Prefecture. It is home to Akiu Falls (a national scenic spot), said to be the best waterfall in the Tohoku region, Anetaki Falls (a national natural monument) where a pothole and a waterfall are combined, and Banjiiwa (a national scenic spot) which is a large rock wall of columnar joints of tuff. Together with Rairaikyo Gorge downstream, it is a prefectural natural park. The area is a habitat for Japanese serows, Japanese macaques, and rollers. The main prefectural road Sendai-Yamadera Line (Futakuchi Highway) runs along the Natori River to Futakuchi Onsen. At the entrance to the gorge, there is the Akiu Visitor Center, which introduces the nature of the area through models and panels. There are buses available from Sendai Station and Ayashi Station on the Senzan Line.

宮城県中部、仙台市太白区にある名取川(なとりがわ)上流の峡谷。秋保(あきう)大滝から山形県境の二口峠付近までの約8キロメートルをいう。東北地方随一の瀑布(ばくふ)といわれる秋保大滝（国の名勝）、甌穴(おうけつ)と滝とが結合した姉滝（国の天然記念物）、凝灰岩柱状節理の大岩壁をなす磐司岩(ばんじいわ)（国の名勝）などがあり、下流の磊々峡(らいらいきょう)とともに県立自然公園となっている。一帯はカモシカ、ニホンザル、ブッポウソウの生息地である。名取川に沿って主要地方道仙台山寺線（二口街道）が二口温泉まで通る。また、渓谷の入口には、この地域の自然を模型やパネルで紹介する秋保ビジターセンターがある。仙台駅と仙山(せんざん)線愛子(あやし)駅からバスの便がある。
