Located near Tacoma, Washington, USA, this suspension bridge spans Puget Sound, separating the mainland of Washington from the Olympic Peninsula. Built in 1940, it boasted the third longest span in the world at that time, at 853m. However, on November 7, just four months after it opened, it collapsed due to violent vibrations caused by a moderate wind speed of 19m/s. From the beginning, it was recognized that this bridge would vibrate even in light winds, and this had attracted attention. On the day of the collapse, researchers from the University of Washington were on site, and the entire accident was recorded on film, becoming a valuable resource.
