An early Christian church in Milan, Italy. It was built around 385 to commemorate the 3rd century martyr St. Ambrose (who rests beneath the apse). It has been remodeled many times, and today most of the building is in the Lombard Romanesque style (11th-12th century). The interior of the church already shows the use of ribbed vaults, making it one of the earliest examples, along with Durham Cathedral (England). The Chapel of San Vittore in Cielo d'Oro, connected to the side aisle, contains a 5th century mosaic including a portrait of Ambrose. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
