Ulster Rebellion

A rebellion by the Irish (Catholics) against the Scottish and English (Protestants) that began in October 1641 in the Ulster region of Ireland. It gradually spread throughout the country, and eventually the Kilkenny League (1642) was formed under the leadership of the Catholic clergy, demanding religious freedom, self-government, and the restoration of lost lands. Under the command of Owen Roe O'Neill, the rebellion was often victorious in battle, but was unable to subjugate the entire country, and was largely suppressed by Cromwell in 1649-50.

1641年10月，アイルランドのアルスター地方で始まったアイルランド人(カトリック)によるスコットランド人およびイングランド人(プロテスタント)に対する反乱。しだいに全土にひろがり，やがてカトリック聖職者の指導の下にキルケニー同盟(1642)を結成し，信仰の自由，自治，奪われた土地の回復を求めた。オニールOwen Roe O’Neillの指揮の下にしばしば戦闘で勝利したが，全土の制圧はならず，49‐50年にクロムウェルによりほぼ鎮圧された。
