Tagohi monument

Japanese:
Tagohi monument

This stone monument is located in Ike, Yoshii-machi, Takasaki City, Gunma Prefecture. It is one of the three Kozuke monuments, along with the Kanaizawa Monument and the Yamanoue Monument, and is also counted as one of the three oldest monuments in Japan. The monument is 129 cm high, 69 cm wide, and 62 cm thick, with a square pillar-shaped body and a capstone that is 95 cm wide, 90 cm deep, and 27 cm thick. The inscription, which is 6 lines and 80 characters in Chinese, records that in March of the 4th year of the Wadou era (711), 300 households from the three counties of Kataoka, Midorino, and Kara were established as Tako County, and it is also known as the Tako County Founding Monument, and has been designated a special historic site. In early modern times, Kariya Ekisai and Ban Nobutomo introduced and studied the stone, and in modern times, Kuroita Katsumi and Ozaki Kisao (1904-1978) deciphered the inscription and conducted archaeological research. Ozaki assumed that the "hitsuji" in the text was the name of a Silla immigrant, and that the stone monument was built by this person. He also used Chinese shaku to design the monument, and because the height of the monument was 1.4 times the width of the capstone, he estimated that the height of the monument was the same as the width of the capstone.
