Biochemist. Born in Tokyo on November 21, 1910. Graduated from the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science, Tokyo Imperial University in 1933 (Showa 8). Studied at the University of Strasbourg and the Institute of Biophysical Chemistry, Paris as a student invited by the French government. Became a professor at Nagoya Imperial University in 1943, a professor at the University of Tokyo in 1958 (Showa 33), and director of the Life Science Research Institute at Mitsubishi Chemical (now Mitsubishi Chemical) from 1971 to 1981. During this time, he served as president of the Science Council of Japan, the Japanese Biochemical Society, the Chemical Society of Japan, and the International Society for the Origin of Life, and was an honorary member of the American Biochemical Society and a professor emeritus at Nagoya University. His main achievements include the discovery of ribonucleases T 1 and T 2 , and research into their structure and function, as well as research into the origin of life. He contributed to the development of biochemistry research and education, and founded space biochemistry in Japan. He received the Japan Academy Prize and the Legion of Honor. His older brother is Namio Egami, an Oriental history and archaeologist. His books for the general public include "Exploring Life" (Iwanami Shinsho).
