Bhāravi - Bhāravi (English spelling)

Date of birth and death unknown. Indian Sanskrit poet. He is thought to have lived around the 5th or 6th century. His name appears on an inscription excavated at Aihole (634) along with Kalidasa. His works include the epic poem Kiratharjuniya, which is based on the Mahabharata and tells the story of how Prince Arjuna fights with Shiva, who is in the form of a mountain man named Kiratha, and obtains a divine weapon. Its meter and rhetorical techniques are noteworthy.

生没年不詳。インドのサンスクリット詩人。5、6世紀ごろの人と思われる。アイホーレ発掘の碑銘（634）にはカーリダーサとともにその名を連ねている。彼の作としては『マハーバーラタ』から取材し、アルジュナ王子が山男キラータの姿をしたシバ神と格闘して天授の武器を得る顛末(てんまつ)を述べた叙事詩『キラータールジュニーヤ』があり、その韻律と修辞上の技巧は注目される。
