A colloquial term for callus, referring to localized keratinocyte thickening. It occurs as a defense reaction of the skin in areas that are repeatedly exposed to external stimuli such as pressure or friction over a long period of time. It is usually a hard, yellowish-brown square plate with a smooth or slightly rough surface. Patients may sometimes complain of tenderness. Examples include calluses that develop in specific areas due to certain occupations (such as calluses on the elbows of tatami mat makers), as well as calluses caused by pens, sitting, and blisters. Treatment is primarily focused on avoiding the cause and not applying external force to the area, but symptomatic treatment involves applying Speel plaster or Pick's plaster.
