City - Shii (English spelling) City of London

City - Shii (English spelling) City of London

It is a part of the center of London, the capital of the United Kingdom. It is located on the left bank (north side) of the River Thames. It is a special administrative district under the direct control of the Mayor of London. Although it has an area of about 2.7 square kilometers and a population of 7,186 (2001), it is the birthplace of London historically and flourished as the heart of world politics and economy during the heyday of the British Empire. It is still the center of international finance, insurance, and shipping, on par with New York, and more than 600,000 businessmen and tourists gather there during the day. Although it has a long history, most of the old buildings, except for St. Paul's Cathedral and the Guildhall, were destroyed by the great fire in the 17th century and the air raids during World War II. After World War II, modern buildings have sprung up and there is no trace of the past. The Barbican district in the center has been redeveloped and has become the new face of the City, with apartment buildings, music halls, and theaters.

history

The city in the narrow sense refers to the central area as explained above, but the development of this area is especially important in relation to the wider medieval city of London. The origin of the city in the broad sense can be traced back to the construction of the city walls that bounded the city boundaries and the royal charter for self-government under the city council. The oldest fortress was built by the Romans, but it was rebuilt by King Alfred the Great at the end of the 9th century, and later William I built the Tower of London on the east side to strengthen the defense of the city. The city charter was issued during the reign of Richard I, and the first mayoral election was held in 1193. The city in the narrow sense was created by the development of commerce throughout the Middle Ages. Hanseatic merchants appeared as early as the 12th century, and Lombard Street, the financial center, was an area where Italian (Lombardy) banks set up shop. However, the modernization of the City can be said to have begun with the establishment of the Royal Exchange by Elizabeth I (1571) and was completed with the opening of the Bank of England (1694).
