The Imperial Palace of Emperor Jomei and his Empress Saimei. According to the Nihon Shoki, in October of the second year of the reign of Emperor Jomei, Emperor Jomei built Okamoto Palace near Asukaoka, but in June of the eighth year, it burned down and he moved to Tanaka Palace. In 656, Emperor Saimei built Go-Asuka Okamoto Palace (later Asuka Okamoto Palace) in Asuka Okamoto and moved there from Kawara Palace, but it burned down in the same year. After the Jinshin War, Emperor Tenmu built Asuka Kiyomihara Palace to the south of Go-Asuka Okamoto Palace. Regarding the location of the palace, there are several theories about its location, including the eastern theory that it was located at the site of Daikandai-ji Temple (present-day Oyama, Asuka village, Nara prefecture), and that Asukaoka is the area stretching from Asukaniimasu Shrine (present-day Asuka, Asuka village) to Okadera Temple (present-day Oka, Asuka village), including the traditional site of Asuka Itabuki Palace (present-day Asuka village).
