Neptis philyra (three-lined butterfly)

Neptis philyra (three-lined butterfly)
An insect of the Nymphalidae family of the Lepidoptera order. It is a medium-sized butterfly with a wingspan of 6 to 7 cm. Females are larger than males, and individuals from warm and lowland areas are larger than those from cold and mountainous areas. Its wings are long and black with white markings, and when it stands still with its wings spread, the white markings look like the Chinese character for three, hence the name. The markings on the underside are almost a direct replacement of the black background with reddish brown. It is found in mainland Japan, but is rare in Hokkaido. It is common in low mountain areas and canyons, and flies and glides slowly. It does not gather on flowers or tree sap, and is probably sucking the secretions of aphids that have fallen on leaves, etc.
