Year of birth: Unknown. A senior retainer of the Shimazu clan, a military commander in the Warring States and Azuchi-Momoyama periods. Son of Tadakura. Genta, Uemon-dayu. A local lord based in Ijuin, Satsuma (Kagoshima Prefecture), he served Shimazu Yoshihisa as a middle elder, and in 1580 he served as land steward in various parts of Osumi and Hyuga, and was involved in the war to expand his territory. After the death of Oda Nobunaga, he invaded Yatsushiro and participated in the military annexation of Higo, and in 1581, a joint letter of Sen no Rikyu and Hosokawa Yusai, which conveyed Toyotomi Hideyoshi's peace decree, was addressed to Tadamune. In April 1590, he was defeated by Toyotomi's army at Hyuga Neshirasaka, taken hostage, and became a monk. Later, he approached Ishida Mitsunari, and in 1595, he was given 80,000 koku of land in Miyakonojo. After Hideyoshi's death, and with Mitsunari's downfall, he was executed at the Fushimi residence of his lord, Shimazu Iehisa. He was fond of waka poetry and had a friendship with Yuusai.

戦国・安土桃山時代の武将,島津氏の宿老。忠倉の子。源太,右衛門大夫。薩摩(鹿児島県)伊集院を本拠とする国人の出で,島津義久に仕え中老となり,天正8(1580)年には大隅,日向各地の地頭を兼ね,領国拡大戦争に関与した。織田信長の死後は八代に侵出して肥後併合の軍事に従い,同13年豊臣秀吉の平和令を奉ずる千利休・細川幽斎連署の添状は忠棟に宛てられている。同15年4月日向根白坂で豊臣軍に敗れ,人質として捕らえられ出家。のち石田三成に接近し,文禄4(1595)年都城8万石を領した。秀吉没後,三成の失脚に伴い主家島津家久の伏見邸で誅殺された。和歌をよくし,幽斎と交流があった。
