Icosium

...It is located at the western end of the Bay of Algiers, and is connected to the plain to the southeast, but there is little flat land because the sea to the east and the 250m high hills called the Sahel to the west are close behind it, making Algiers a typical hilly town. The history of the town began when the Phoenicians built a trading post on a small island at the northern end, and in Roman times it was called Icosium. In the 10th century, the Amir of the Jirid dynasty built the town and named it Jazzair (plural of the Arabic word for "island"). ...
