Kamigamo Folk Crafts Association

…It is often thought that the Teiten-style crafts and folk arts are unrelated, but originally, both were antipodean reactions to the modern Japanese culture that had been built by the utilitarian spirit of the Meiji era. In 1926, Yanagi Muneyoshi, the leader of the movement, published the “Statement of Purpose for the Establishment of the Japanese Folk Crafts Museum” in collaboration with ceramic artists Tomimoto Kenkichi, Kawai Kanjiro, and Hamada Shoji, which set the movement’s ideological direction. In 1927, he put his ideas into practice by forming the Kamigamo Folk Crafts Association with dyer and weaver Aota Goro (1898-1935) and woodworker Kuroda Tatsuaki (1904-82). Yanagi’s ideas, influenced by the British craftsman W. Morris, were originally intended to produce today’s household items based on the beauty seen in everyday utensils of the past. …

…帝展系工芸と民芸とは無縁だと思われがちだが，もともと両者は，明治の功利主義的精神が築いてきた近代日本文化に対する対蹠的反応だったといえる。　運動の指導者だった柳宗悦は，1926年に富本憲吉，河井寛次郎，浜田庄司らの陶芸家と連名で，〈日本民芸美術館設立趣意書〉を発表して運動を思想的に方向づけ，27年に染織の青田五良(1898‐1935)，木工の黒田辰秋（たつあき）(1904‐82)らと上賀茂民芸協団を結成して，その思想を実践に移した。イギリスの工芸家W.モリスの影響を受けていた柳の思想においては，かつての日常雑器に見られた美を基準にして，今日の生活用品を生産することが本来の目的だったからである。…
