A republic in the southwest of the Russian Federation, in the North Caucasus. The Dagestan Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic of the Soviet Union became a constituent republic of the Russian Federation in March 1992, following the dissolution of the federation, under the Treaty of Russian Federation. The region's name Dagestan comes from the Turkish words "dag" (mountain) and "stan" (country). Located on the northern slope of the eastern end of the Caucasus Mountains, three-quarters of the country is mountainous, facing the Caspian Sea to the east, with the Kuma River, Terek River, Sulak River, and Samur River running through it. Area 50,300 km2. Population 1,802,200 (1989), capital Makhachkala.

ロシア連邦南西部，北カフカスにある共和国。ソビエト連邦のダゲスタン自治ソビエト社会主義共和国が，連邦解体後の92年3月，ロシア連邦条約でロシア連邦を構成する共和国となった。地域名ダゲスタンはトルコ語の〈ダグ(山)〉〈スタン(国)〉に由来する。カフカス山脈の東端の北斜面に位置し，国土の3/4は山地で，東にカスピ海を臨み，クマ川，テレク川，スラク川，サムル川が貫流する。面積5万0300km2。人口180万2200(1989)，主都マハチカラ。
