A republic in the southwest of the Russian Federation, in the North Caucasus. The Dagestan Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic of the Soviet Union became a constituent republic of the Russian Federation in March 1992, following the dissolution of the federation, under the Treaty of Russian Federation. The region's name Dagestan comes from the Turkish words "dag" (mountain) and "stan" (country). Located on the northern slope of the eastern end of the Caucasus Mountains, three-quarters of the country is mountainous, facing the Caspian Sea to the east, with the Kuma River, Terek River, Sulak River, and Samur River running through it.
