A general term for birds of the Centropus genus in the Lesser Cuckoo family. There are 27 known species. Overall length is 30-75cm. Their plumage is generally a shade of brown or black. Their beak is thick and strong, with a hooked tip. Their legs are also thick and strong. Their wings are short and rounded, and their tail is long and wedge-shaped. Like other lesser cuckoo species, they have paired feet, with two toes on each side. They are found in Asia, Africa, Australia, etc., and live in tall grasslands and scrub forests.

ホトトギス目ホトトギス科バンケン属Centropusの鳥の総称。27種が知られている。全長30～75cm。全体に褐色や黒のじみな羽色をしている。くちばしは太くてがんじょうで，先がかぎ状に曲がっている。脚も太くてがんじょうである。つばさは短くて丸く，尾はくさび状で長い。ほかのホトトギス類と同様に対趾足であしゆびが前後に2本ずつついている。アジア，アフリカ，オーストラリアなどに分布し，丈の高い草原や低木林にすんでいる。
