A sailing training ship belonging to the Nautical Training Institute. It provides maritime training for students from maritime universities and maritime technical colleges across the country. The Nautical Training Institute was made an independent administrative institution under the Independent Administrative Institution Nautical Training Institute Act (promulgated December 22, 1999, and enacted January 6, 2001, Act No. 213). Prior to that, it belonged to the Ministry of Transport for a long time, and came under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism when the government was reorganized in January 2001. Since then, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism has been the competent ministry. [Torao Shigezai] The first KaiwomaruIn 1928 (Showa 3), the Ministry of Education planned to build it as a training ship for the Merchant Marine School, along with its sister ship, Nippon Maru. In 1930, the Ministry of Education's Nautical Training Institute was established, and Nippon Maru and Kaiwo Maru were completed in the same year and came under the jurisdiction of the institute, starting out as training ships. In 1943, the institute was renamed the Nautical Training Institute, and after passing through the Ministry of Communications, it came under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Transport's Nautical Training Institute in 1945. The first Kaiwo Maru was built at Kobe Kawasaki Shipyard and launched on February 14, 1930. It was a 2,238 gross tons, 97 meters long, 13 meters wide, with two diesel engines and 1,440 horsepower, a four-masted barque-type sailing ship made of steel. Along with Nippon Maru, it was a star sailing training ship in Japan for over 50 years. The ship was praised as the "Lady of the Sea" for its beautiful sailing across the ocean, and has trained over 11,000 sailors. Its total voyage distance was about 1.06 million nautical miles (about 1.96 million kilometers), mainly in the North Pacific Ocean, which is equivalent to circling the globe about 50 times. However, the ship was nearly 60 years old and its deterioration was becoming evident. Therefore, the Ministry of Transport began construction of a new second-generation Kaiwo Maru, which was completed in 1989 (Heisei 1), and at the same time the first Kaiwo Maru was retired. It was later transferred to the Kaiwo Maru Sail Ship Memorial Foundation and moored in Shinminato City (now Imizu City), Toyama Prefecture, and opened to the public as a preserved sailing ship, and the area around it became Kaiwo Maru Park. It holds document exhibitions, marine training, lectures, and events, and regular sailing shows. [Torao Shigezai] The second KaiwomaruThe second-generation new sailing ship to replace the first-generation Kaiwomaru, it was built at the Uraga Factory of Sumitomo Heavy Industries' Oppama Shipyard and launched on March 7, 1989. Its purpose of use, affiliation, and operation are the same as the first-generation, but the second-generation Kaiwomaru is used not only for navigation training for trainees, but also for experience sailing and marine classes for the general public, contributing to the spread of maritime ideas. 2,556 gross tons, 110.09 meters long, 13.80 meters wide, two diesel engines, two 1,500 horsepower outputs, four-masted barque-type sailing ship.
