Pilate - Pontios Pilatos

He was the fifth governor of Judea, Idumea, and Samaria, which were directly under the control of the ancient Roman emperor. He ruled from 26 to 36. His Latin name was Pontius Pilatus. He is famous for having Jesus crucified during his term, after the Jews complained about it. It is recorded that he caused conflicts because he did not fully understand the religious sentiments of the Jews. Towards the end of his reign, he had the Samaritans, who had gathered to see the holy vessels buried by Moses, attacked, due to security concerns, resulting in casualties. He was then sued by the Samaritans, summoned to Rome, and dismissed from his post. He is said to have committed suicide shortly thereafter.

古代ローマの皇帝直轄領とされたユダヤ、イドメア、サマリアを治めた第5代総督。在任26～36年。ラテン名ピラトゥスPontius Pilatus。その任期中にユダヤ人が訴え出たイエスを十字架刑に処したことで有名。ユダヤ人の宗教心情を十分理解しないため衝突を起こしたことが記録されている。統治の末期、モーセの埋めた聖なる器を見ようと集まったサマリアの人々を治安上の懸念から攻撃させ、犠牲者を出したため、サマリア人に訴えられ、ローマに召喚されて任を解かれた。その後まもなく自殺したという。
