The term refers to some of the peoples living in the Caucasus region, and is used in two different senses. One refers to the peoples who speak the Dagestani language group of the Caucasian languages, and the other refers to the indigenous peoples living in Dagestan, including the Kumyks and Nogais who speak Turkic languages. Dagestan had a population of 1,444,000 (1989). Christianization progressed mainly in the southern part of the region, thanks to the efforts of the ancient Caucasian Albanian Kingdom and the medieval Georgian Kingdom, but by the 16th century, Sunni Islam had become the predominant faith.
