Norwich School of Painting

Norwich School of Painting
A school of British provincial painting in the early 19th century. The Norwich Society of Artists was founded in February 1803 at the home of landscape painter Crome in Norwich, Norfolk, East Anglia, with the aim of promoting the advancement of painting, architecture, and sculpture, and held annual exhibitions between 1805 and 1825. In 1807, another representative painter of this school, Cotman, joined, and the society's activities continued after Crome's death (1821) and until Cotman's move to London (1834). Although the activities of this school were almost entirely limited to landscape painting, its tendency to focus on natural observation and simple emotion, modeled on 17th-century Dutch landscape painting, played a role in directing J. Constable and JMW Turner to naturalistic landscape painting in Britain, where the tradition of classical, so-called idealistic landscape painting was deeply rooted.
