A city in the central-eastern part of Ibaraki Prefecture, facing the Kashima Nada Sea. In 1994, Nakaminato City and Katsuta City merged and changed their name. It borders Mito City to the southwest, separated by the Naka River, and Tokai Village to the north. Nakaminato, located on the north bank of the Naka River estuary, was a commercial port for the Mito Domain in the early modern period, and prospered through maritime transport to Oshu and Edo. It is a base for deep-sea fishing, and seafood processing is thriving. Katsuta District, located on the plateau in the north, has rapidly developed since Hitachi's factory was established there in 1940, and has become an industrial city centered on electric locomotives and electrical equipment. Its manufacturing shipment value was 783.7 billion yen (2003), making it the third largest in the prefecture. The former site of the U.S. military's Mito Firing Range, located north of Ajigaura, is used for the Hitachi Seaside Park and other facilities. Construction of the international port of Hitachinaka Port began in 1989, and construction is underway to make the port a northern hub for logistics in the greater Tokyo area. The city is served by the Joban Line and Hitachinaka Seaside Railway. Sakatsuraisosaki Shrine is located in the south, and Tozuka Kofun (historic site) with its painted murals is located in the northwest. The city suffered damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake. Area: 99.93 km2 . Population: 157,060 (2010). Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
