A former town in Kamiina District, southern Nagano Prefecture. It occupies the Mibu River basin and its tributaries, the Fujisawa River and the Yamamuro River, and is mostly mountainous. The central settlement was the castle town of the Naito clan of Takato Domain, and flourished as a key location for crossing Tsuetsuki Pass. The ruins of Takato Castle are a famous cherry blossom spot. There is a bus service from Ina City, and it is a base for climbing the Southern Alps, and is home to the grave of Ejima, who became an exile. 長野県南部,上伊那郡の旧町。三峰(みぶ)川と支流の藤沢川,山室川の流域を占め,大部分は山地。中心集落は高遠藩内藤氏の城下町,杖突(つえつき)峠越えの要地として栄えた。高遠城跡は桜の名所。伊那市からバスが通じ,南アルプスの登山基地,遠流(おんる)となった江島の墓がある。2006年3月上伊那郡長谷村と伊那市へ編入。139.36km2。7251人(2003)。→江島生島
