Mountaineer. Born in Fukazawa Village, Niigata Prefecture. His real name was Shoku. He studied Chinese classics in Tokyo, and climbed Mt. Fuji in 1898 (Meiji 31). After reading Shiga Shigetaka's "Nihon Fukeiron" (Theory of Japanese Landscapes), he became passionate about mountaineering, and made many climbs during the dawn of mountaineering in the Meiji era, including Mt. Fuji, Mt. Yari, and Mt. Kiso-Ontake. He was a strong financial supporter of the Japan Alpine Club when it was founded. He was the second president of the club and an honorary member. There is a bronze statue of him at the summit of Mt. Yahiko in Niigata Prefecture. He wrote "Nihon Sangakushi," known as Japan's first mountaineering encyclopedia.
