A marine animal belonging to the family Porifera, class Demospongiae. It is an orange-colored sponge that lives on rocks and in tide pools from the mid-intertidal zone to the subtidal zone of the coast, and is commonly found throughout Japan. Its shell is thin and layered, and often has chimney-like protrusions. Its body is made up of irregularly arranged needle-like bone fragments with sharp ends. It can be found on the coast all year round, but in winter the sponge shrinks in size and grows larger in spring. Acorn sponge barnacles sometimes live symbiotically inside the body. H. surrupicunda , a member of the same genus that is very similar in color to the orange sponge, is found in Kyushu and along the coast of the Sea of ​​Japan, but this species can be distinguished by a bulge in the center of the bone fragment.

海綿動物門尋常海綿綱イソカイメン科に属する海産動物。海岸の潮間帯中部から亜潮間帯にかけて岩の上や潮だまり（タイドプール）に生息する橙(だいだい)色の海綿で日本各地に普通にみられる。殻層状に薄く広がり煙突状の突起が発達することが多い。体は両端がとがった針状の骨片が不規則に配列してできている。一年中、海岸でみられるが、冬には海綿の大きさが縮小し、春に成長して大きくなる。体内にはドングリカイメンフジツボが共生することがある。九州や日本海沿岸には色彩がダイダイイソカイメンに非常によく似た同属のハリカンダリア・スルピカンダH. surrupicundaが分布するが、この種は骨片の中央部に膨らみがあるので識別できる。
