Talos - Talos (English spelling)

(1) A bronze monster in Greek mythology. He is said to have been a bronze man created by Hephaestus and given to King Minos of Crete, or to have been the last surviving human of the "Bronze Age." By Minos' orders, Talos patrolled the island of Crete three times a day to keep watch, and when a foreigner landed on the island, he would heat his bronze body red hot and embrace the person to death. He also had only one vein running from his neck to his heel, the end of which was fastened by a bronze nail. When the Argonauts stopped at this island on their way home, Medea used her magic to remove the nail from Talos' heel, and he was killed. (2) The nephew of the master craftsman Daedalus in Greek mythology. His mother was Daedalus' sister Perdix (meaning "partridge"), and Talos became an apprentice to the master craftsman Daedalus at the age of 12. However, there is a later theory that the name Perdix was actually Talos himself. The clever and resourceful Talos invented the saw, inspired by the jawbone of a snake or the teeth of a fish, and also invented the potter's wheel. Daedalus, fearing that Talos would surpass him, killed him by pushing him off the cliff of the Acropolis. It is said that the goddess Athena took pity on Talos as he fell and turned him into a goat, or that his mother, grieving over her son's death and committing suicide, was turned into a goat.

（1）ギリシア神話の青銅の怪物。ヘファイストスがつくった青銅の人間で、クレタ王ミノスに与えられたものとも、あるいは「青銅時代」の最後の生き残りの人間ともいわれる。ミノスの命令で、クレタ島を日に三度巡って見張りをしていたが、異国の者が上陸すると自分の青銅の身体を火で赤熱させ、その者を抱き殺した。また彼には、首から踵(かかと)まで通じるただ1本の血管しかなく、その先端は青銅の釘(くぎ)で留めてあった。アルゴナウタイが帰国の途中にこの島に寄港したとき、タロスはメデイアの魔法で踵の釘を抜かれ、殺されたという。（2）ギリシア神話の名工ダイダロスの甥(おい)。母はダイダロスの姉妹ペルディクス（「鷓鴣(しゃこ)」の意）で、彼は12歳のときに巨匠ダイダロスのもとへ弟子入りした。ただし、ペルディクスという名は彼自身であるとする後世の説もある。利発で才知のあるタロスは、蛇の顎(あご)骨または魚の歯からヒントを得て鋸(のこぎり)を発明し、さらに轆轤(ろくろ)も考案したという。やがてタロスが自分を凌駕(りょうが)することを恐れたダイダロスは、彼をアクロポリスの崖(がけ)から突き落として殺した。落下する彼を女神アテネが哀れんで鷓鴣に変えたとも、あるいは息子の最期を悲しんで自殺した母親が鷓鴣に変えられたともいわれる。
