A town in the Rio Grande basin, 86 km north-northeast of Santa Fe, in northern New Mexico, USA. It is also known as the home of the indigenous Pueblo people. The Anasazi people, who settled here in the 13th century, were invaded by the Spanish in the early 16th century, and then came under the rule of the United States, which won the Mexican-American War. Reflecting this history, the town is divided into Ranchos de Taos, which retains a strong trace of the Spanish colonial era, the Mexican-style Don Fernando de Taos, and the Pueblo settlement of San Geronimo de Taos. San Geronimo de Taos in particular presents a unique landscape with a row of collective houses made of stacked sun-dried bricks, plastered with mud, and stacked like dice. The people who live there continue to live traditional lives and inherit their unique culture, having overcome several historical hardships. It was registered as a cultural heritage of the World Heritage Site in 1992. Population 4,065 (1990).
