Karl XII - Karl
King of Sweden (reigned 1697-1718). In 1700, he started the Northern War, invaded Denmark, defeated the Russian army at the Battle of Narva, and advanced into Poland. In 1709, he was defeated by the Russian army at the Battle of Poltava, but escaped and continued to resist. He was killed in battle with Norway. Sweden lost its position as the master of the Baltic Sea.
