...For example, there are memoirs by such people as Commines, who served Louis XI and Charles VIII, Jean-François Paul de Gondi, cardinal de Retz (1613-79), who played an active role in the Fronde in the 17th century, the Duke of Saint-Simon, who vividly described the inner workings of court politics during the reign of Louis XIV, and the "Memoirs of St. Helena," written down and edited by Las Cases, a conversation by Napoleon in his later years of despair. It is natural that noteworthy memoirs should be produced after historical upheavals, and in England, after the religious and political upheavals of the 17th century, such as the "Memoirs of the Life of Colonel Hutchinson" and the "Personal Reminiscences" by Sir Kenelm Digby (1603-65), some of which were unique. The former is a memoir written with great affection by the wife of a Puritan soldier who was caught up in upheaval and suffered hardships after his death, while the latter is a tale, with a fair amount of boasting, of the career of a diplomat and scholar who skillfully navigated the political world during this turbulent period.
