Nademono - Nademono

Japanese:
Nademono - Nademono
A talisman used to remove impurities from the body. Generally, when an onmyoji (exorcist) performs an exorcism or prayer, he prepares a doll or clothing, rubs the client's impurities onto it, and then washes it away in the river. During the Heian period, at the once-in-a-lifetime Yasoshima Festival held in Naniwazu, Settsu, people would shake a talisman made of hemp bestowed by the emperor to transfer impurities to a gold and silver doll, which was then discarded on the beach. This eventually influenced the exorcism known as the Rokuji Karinho in esoteric Buddhism, in which a boat is floated on the river, and while monks chant sutras and onmyoji chant Nakatomi no Harai (exorcist's Nakatomi no Harai), parishioners transfer impurities to a straw doll, sprinkle rice on it, and perform a spell to pass the doll through a straw ring before throwing it into the water.
