A former town in Kitakatsuragi County in the northwest of Nara Prefecture. It occupies the eastern slope of the Kongo Mountains and the southwest corner of the Nara Basin. There are many pharmaceutical factories, as well as plastic processing and hosiery industries. Flower cultivation of chrysanthemums and other flowers and fruit trees is also thriving. Ginger is a specialty. It is served by the Wakayama Line and the Kintetsu Gose Line, and in recent years has seen significant residential development. 奈良県北西部,北葛城(きたかつらぎ)郡の旧町。金剛山地の東斜面と奈良盆地の南西隅を占める。製薬の工場が多いほか,プラスチック加工,メリヤス業などを行う。キクなどの花卉(かき)や果樹の栽培も盛ん。ショウガを特産。和歌山線,近鉄御所(ごせ)線が通じ,近年は住宅地化が著しい。2004年10月北葛城郡当麻町と合併し,葛城市となる。17.77km2。1万9553人(2003)。
