Rh antigen

The amount of ABH substances found in secretions such as saliva varies significantly from person to person, and this allows humans to be broadly classified into two types: secretory and non-secretory.

There are 45 types of antigens (Rh antigens) that belong to this blood group system, but the five that are the most basic and are the subject of routine testing are D, C, E, c, and e. (There are two theories of Rh blood group inheritance: AS Wiener's theory and R. Fisher-R Race's theory. The theories differ in their approach to antigen structure and in the nomenclature of antigens, antibodies, and types, but here we will adopt the latter theory, which is thought to be easier to understand, and follow the CDE nomenclature.) When these five antigens are examined, there are more than 18 types, which provide very useful information from a genetic standpoint, but when examining Rh blood types for clinical medical purposes such as blood transfusions, it is customary to first examine only the D antigen (for the reason, see "Blood Types and Blood Transfusions" below).
