…In literature, stories of revenge became popular in the field of kibyōshi, where the Kansei Reforms prohibited the use of contemporary customs and current affairs. Nansen Shōsomahito's Katakiuchigijōnohanabusa (1795) was the beginning of this trend. Eventually, in cooperation with the newly emerging Yomihon, Shikitei Sanba, Jippensha Ikku, Sankyōden and others began to write stories of revenge, and the genre reached its heyday in the Bunka 1st year and after. …

...There are various theories that his main occupation was a scabbard maker, a bookseller, or a doctor. His debut work was the kibyō shamisen yūrai (The Origin of Vengeance on the Shamisen) (1783), and he wrote mostly stories that were not in keeping with the times and lacked humor, but his gijiyo no hanabusa (The Righteous Woman's Heroic Vengeance) (1795) was a big hit, and from then on, his kibyō shōdai gradually increased in content with revenge as its theme. From 1803 (Kyōwa 3), he wrote more than 10 kinds of stories every year, keeping up with the times until the year of his death....
