Orthopyxis caliculata

Japanese: アシナガコップガヤ（英語表記）Orthopyxis caliculata

A coelenterate (cnidaria) of the family Polytrichum, class Hydrozoa. It is found throughout Japan, growing on various seaweeds in shallow waters. A hydrostalk about 5 mm tall stands upright from the hydroroot that attaches to the object, and a cup-shaped hydropod is attached to the tip. There is a spherical constriction just below the hydropod, and the hydrostalk has oblique segments along its entire length. The mouth edge is smooth. The reproductive pod is flattened and egg-shaped, growing from the hydroroot and attached by a short stalk. Unlike the hydrozoan species Polytrichum or bryozoan, it does not cause damage to useful seaweed such as kelp.

ヒドロ虫綱ウミサカズキガヤ科の腔腸動物(刺胞動物)。日本各地に分布し，浅海のいろいろな海藻類などの上に着生している。物の上に付着するヒドロ根から高さ5mmほどのヒドロ茎が直立し，その先端にコップ状のヒドロ莢（きよう）をつける。ヒドロ莢のすぐ下には1個の球状のくびれがあり，ヒドロ茎の全長には斜めの環節がある。口縁は平滑。生殖莢は扁平な卵形で，ヒドロ根より生じ，短い柄で付着する。ヒドロ虫類のハネガヤやコケムシ類のようにコンブなどの有用海藻に被害を与えるようなことはない。
