America's second largest diversified chemical manufacturer. Headquartered in Midland, Michigan. Founded in Midland in 1897 by Canadian-born American chemist Herbert Henry Dow (1866-1930). Starting out with the production of bromine using an electrolytic process, Dow expanded its business to include the production of magnesium, chlorine, caustic soda, and other chemicals, and by the end of World War II had grown into one of America's leading chemical manufacturers. In 1947, it inherited the assets and business of the former Dow Chemical Company, and the new Dow Chemical Company was registered in Delaware (headquartered in Midland).

アメリカ第2位の総合化学メーカー。本社ミシガン州ミッドランド。カナダ生れのアメリカの化学者ダウHerbert Henry Dow(1866‐1930)が1897年にミッドランドに設立した。電解プロセスによる臭素の製造から出発し，マグネシウム，塩素，苛性ソーダなどの製造へと事業を拡大，第2次大戦が終わるころにはアメリカ有数の化学メーカーに成長した。1947年，旧ダウ･ケミカル社の資産･事業を継承し，デラウェア州に新ダウ･ケミカル社が設立登記された(本社としてはミッドランド)。
