…The museum was founded when the art collection of the Russian-born banker JJ Angerstein was purchased by the state and exhibited in his mansion in 1824. The current building in Trafalgar Square was built in 1833-37 to a design by W. Wilkins. Unlike many national art museums in other Western countries, the museum was not based on a royal collection, but rather on works that were collected by successive directors based on their discerning eye and taste, and that were later donated and bequeathed by individuals. …
