Manipulation - Puppetry

Generally speaking, it means the skillful manipulation of objects or people, but there are many terms related to puppet theater in particular. There are terms such as puppetry kyogen (manipulation kyogen), puppet theater, and puppetry joruri (manipulation joruri), and sometimes they are simply called puppetry. The word puppet theater referred to a troupe or a small theater that performed puppet theaters. Many related words have been derived from this word, such as the puppets themselves, the person manipulating them being called a puppeteer (or puppeteer), the stage being called a puppet stage, and the props being called puppet tools, all of which are related to the things involved in puppet theater. A karakuri performance or a stage where karakuri are applied is called a puppetry machine (puppetry machine). In the field of string manipulation, examples include puppet board (hand board) and strings. One play that depicts the movements of puppets as kabuki shosagoto (movements) is "Ayatsuri Sanba." Outside of puppet shows, there are other terms such as shinsho and soba.

一般的には物や人を巧妙に操作することをいうが、とくに人形芝居に関する用語が多い。操狂言(あやつりきょうげん)、操芝居、操浄瑠璃(じょうるり)などで、それらを単に操りということもあった。操座といえば人形芝居を興行する一座、または小屋(こや)（劇場）をさした。その人形を操人形といったり、操る人を操方（あるいは操師）、舞台を操舞台、大道具類を操道具というように、操興行の事物に関する関連語を多く派生させている。からくり興行またはからくり応用の舞台を操機関(あやつりからくり)といった。糸操りの分野では操板（手板）、操糸の用例がある。操人形の動作ぶりを歌舞伎(かぶき)の所作事(しょさごと)にうつしたものに『操(あやつり)三番(さんば)』がある。なお人形芝居以外では、操身上(しんしょう)、操相場などの用語がある。
