Kitano Shrine

Japanese: 北野神社 - きたのじんじゃ

This shrine is located in Bakuro-cho, Kamigyo-ku, Kyoto City. It is also called Kitano Tenjin or Kitano Tenmangu, and its deity is Sugawara no Michizane. After Michizane died in Dazaifu, strange incidents frequently occurred throughout Kyoto. It was believed that these were a curse from Michizane, and so Michizane was enshrined here in the mid-10th century. Since the Middle Ages, it has been famous as the god of learning. The shrine's divine servant, Sake Kojiza, is also famous in the history of commerce in the Middle Ages. The main hall, built in 1067, is a typical example of the Gongen-zukuri style and is a national treasure.

京都市上京区馬喰町にある神社。祭神は菅原道真
北野天神・北野天満宮ともいう。道真が大宰府で死んだのち京中に異変がしばしばおこり，これを道真のたたりとし，10世紀中ごろこの地に道真を祭ったのに始まる。中世以降，学問の神として有名。またこの社の神人 (じにん) の酒麴座は中世商業史上著名である。1067年造営の本殿は代表的な権現造 (ごんげんつくり) で，国宝。
