Gas nitriding method

Japanese:
Gas nitriding method

...A surface hardening method that hardens only the surface layer by penetrating and diffusing nitrogen into the surface of steel, resulting in a material with excellent wear resistance and other properties. Nitriding is performed on gears, piston rings, and parts of the sliding parts of machines, but these steels are alloy steels containing aluminum, chromium, molybdenum, titanium, manganese, etc., which have a strong affinity with nitrogen, and are specifically called nitrided steels. Nitriding is broadly classified into gas nitriding and liquid nitriding depending on the type of nitrogen source. (1) Gas nitriding When the material to be treated is heated and held in an ammonia stream at 500 to 550°C for 20 to 100 hours, the ammonia decomposes to produce nascent nitrogen and hydrogen, which combine with iron to form nitrides such as Fe 2 N(ε) and Fe 4 N(γ′), forming a nitrided layer. ...
