An instrument for measuring the second derivative of gravitational potential, i.e. the curvature of the geoid or the gradient of gravity at a given point. It was invented by R. Eötbess in Budapest and is also known as the Eötbess torsion balance. A rod with a weight attached directly to one end is placed horizontally, and a weight attached to the other end is suspended by a thin wire, and the center of the rod is supported by a thin wire. The difference in gravity acting on the two weights measures the magnitude of torsion of the latter wire. A sensitivity of 10 -9 gal is problematic, and this unit is called the Eötbess. Such instruments are rarely used today. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
