A classification of Shomiyo (chanting) songs. Also called Kango no San. A type of hymn in which Chinese texts are read aloud. Usually, it is a rhymed piece of five or seven lines. There are fewer types than Sanskrit hymns, and the most commonly used are Shichi Kango San, Shinryaku Kango San, Kitsukiyo Kango San, and Shoten Kango San, as well as Fudo Kango San. Generally, it is a piece without beats, with a melody that mainly features decorative elements such as lilies, but in the Tendai school, Shoten Kango San is chanted melodically with beats. Like Sanskrit hymns, it is used in esoteric Buddhist memorial services, as pre- and post-hymns before and after the main part, or as mid-hymns in the middle of a long memorial service, but the content of the lyrics does not necessarily match the content of the memorial service.
