A general term for rockets that are powered by electrical energy. Solar cells or nuclear power plants (some use small nuclear reactors, others use radioisotopes) are used as power sources. Ion rockets and plasma rockets also belong to this type of rocket. These rockets have a small thrust, but are characterized by their ability to accelerate for long periods of time. They are suitable for space transition flights and attitude control after launch from a chemical rocket. For this reason, their use in interplanetary space in the future is being planned and researched.

電気的なエネルギーを動力とするロケットの総称。電源としては太陽電池や原子力発電装置 (小型原子炉を使うものと放射性同位元素を利用するものとある) が使われる。イオンロケットや，プラズマロケットと呼ばれるものもこの様式に入るロケットである。これらのロケットは推力は小さいが，長時間にわたって加速できるのが特徴。化学ロケットで打上げたあとの宇宙空間における遷移飛行，姿勢制御などの飛行用に適している。このため，将来，惑星間空間での利用が計画・研究されている。
