Daugavpils (English spelling)
Located in the southeastern part of the Republic of Latvia facing the Baltic Sea, it is the second largest city in the Republic of Latvia. It has a population of 129,000 (1991). Its German name is Dünaburg, and its Russian name is Dvinsk. It is the largest inland commercial, industrial and cultural city, located on the Daugava (Western Dvina) River, which flows into the Gulf of Riga, and is a key transportation hub where five railway networks connecting Riga, St. Petersburg, Moscow, Vilnius and Klaipeda intersect. The name means "Castle on the Daugava River" and was built in 1275 as a fortress by the German Livonian Knights, who arrived in the 13th century.
