Located in the southeastern part of the Republic of Latvia facing the Baltic Sea, it is the second largest city in the Republic of Latvia. It has a population of 129,000 (1991). Its German name is Dünaburg, and its Russian name is Dvinsk. It is the largest inland commercial, industrial and cultural city, located on the Daugava (Western Dvina) River, which flows into the Gulf of Riga, and is a key transportation hub where five railway networks connecting Riga, St. Petersburg, Moscow, Vilnius and Klaipeda intersect. The name means "Castle on the Daugava River" and was built in 1275 as a fortress by the German Livonian Knights, who arrived in the 13th century. バルト海に臨むラトビア共和国南東部,同共和国第2の都市。人口12万9000(1991)。ドイツ名デューナブルクDünaburg,ロシア名ドビンスクDvinsk。リガ湾に注ぐダウガバ(西ドビナ)川沿いに位置する内陸部最大の商工業・文化都市で,リガ,サンクト・ペテルブルグ,モスクワ,ビルニュス,クライペダに通じる五つの鉄道網が交錯する交通の要所である。地名は〈ダウガバ川の城〉を意味し,13世紀に到来したドイツ人のリボニア騎士団が要塞として1275年に建設した。
