Called Man'iwai or Maiwai, these are festivals and ceremonies held by fishermen to express their gratitude and prayers when they have made a large catch. Methods vary from place to place, but they may be held at the end of the fishing season when the fishermen settle their accounts, every time a ship or fleet returns to port, or when there has been a large catch. On these occasions, it is customary for a "tairyo-bata" (large fishing flag) to be hoisted on the boat, and for the shipowner to present the crew with a maiwai (large fishing uniform) and a red sash. In some places, mock fishing is also carried out. [Takakuwa Morifumi] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
