The Longitudinal Expressway and the Cross-Island Expressway together cover almost the entirety of Shikoku in a figure-8 shape. The Longitudinal Expressway stretches from Tokushima City to Matsuyama City, approximately 222 km long. Of this, the 95 km or so section from Tokushima City to Kawanoe City is called the Tokushima Expressway, of which 53 km has been completed (as of the end of fiscal year 1997), and the 126 km or so section from Kawanoe City to Ozu City is called the Matsuyama Expressway, of which 95 km has been completed from Kawanoe through Matsuyama City to Iyo City. The Cross-Island Expressway is a 443 km long route that runs from Anan in Tokushima Prefecture along the coastline through Tokushima, Takamatsu, and Kawanoe, descending to Kochi, then running west along the Pacific coast, passing through Nakamura and Uwajima, before arriving at Ozu.
