The mission was established in January 1800 by several British Baptist missionaries, including William Carey, in Serampore, a town along the Hooghly River about 20 km north of Calcutta, the center of British colonial rule in India. They established their base of missionary activities in this town, which was then under Danish rule, because the British East India Company was not happy with the missionaries' religious and cultural activities and did not provide them with protection. In addition to their missionary work, the mission also worked to establish schools and promote education, and in particular actively encouraged the teaching of the local language, Bengali.

イギリスのインド植民地支配の中心地カルカッタから北方約20km，フーグリ川沿いの町セランポールに，1800年1月，ウィリアム･ケアリーら数人のイギリス人バプティスト派宣教師によって組織された伝道団。当時デンマーク領であったこの町に彼らが宣教活動の拠点をおいたのは，イギリスの東インド会社が宣教師の宗教･文化活動を快く思わず，保護を与えなかったためである。伝道団は布教のかたわら学校の設立と教育の普及に努め，ことに現地語であるベンガル語の教育を積極的に奨励した。
