A village in Ochi County, northern Ehime Prefecture. Population 5,044 (1995). Located in the eastern part of the Takanawa Peninsula, surrounded by mountains on three sides, the lowlands at the southern end of the Imabari Plain open up along the Tonda River. In ancient times, this was the Asakura district mentioned in the Wamyōshō, and it is home to the Taki Shrine, a Myojin Taisha shrine, and the Kono clan, who ruled the area during the Oei era (1394-1428), built the shrine building. Agriculture is the main industry, and in addition to rice, mandarin oranges and pears are grown, and cucumbers and tomatoes are grown in greenhouses. Urbanization is progressing in the Shimoasakura district in the northeast, adjacent to Imabari City, and many people commute to the city. 愛媛県北部,越智(おち)郡の村。人口5044(1995)。高縄半島の東部に位置し,三方を山に囲まれ,頓田(とんだ)川に沿って今治平野南端の低地が開ける。古代は《和名抄》に記された朝倉郷の地で,名神大社の多伎神社があり,応永年間(1394‐1428)に当地を支配した河野氏が社殿を造営している。基幹産業は農業で,米作のほかミカン,梨の果樹栽培,キュウリ,トマトの施設園芸が行われる。今治市に隣接する北東部の下朝倉地区では都市化が進み,同市への通勤者も多い。
