… In the anatomical sense, the foot is distinguished by the heel, dorsum of the foot, sole, and five toes. The part supported by the tarsal bones (ossa tarsi) is called the tarsus, and the part supported by the metatarsals is called the midfoot. The toes were distinguished from the fingers of the hand by the kanji character 趾, but in recent years this has been abandoned and the character 趾 is used instead, with the character 趾 being added when necessary.
